Bands/Artists

Bottom A trio of hard-rocking NYC ladies who are KF heroes because 1) they quit their jobs, left their apartments and went on the road, full-time, and 2) drummer Clementine "bequeathed" her super-cool freelance job to Doug.
The Breakfast Club Um, because, well, just because.
Darby Jones A cool Jersey powerpop band.
The Excentrics A great DC-based powerpop band.  Our pal and sometimes bassist Randall Johnson has performed with them occasionally.
Hayseed Dixie Good lord, where to begin? This is one of the most brilliant concepts we've ever seen. We've been lucky enough to play with these guys a couple of times. There's nothing we can add to the information on these geniuses' website -- run, don't walk, to their next local show. Lead singer Barley Scotch confided in us, that when growing up, he was torn between his loves for Elvis Costello and AC/DC. If that don't make us kin, we don't know what would.
Claire Holley Claire is a super-cool NC-based singer-songwriter that we like. We hope to work with her soon on an ultra-secret stealth project.
Life in General Some of our best friends in the world, and true follow-your-music-dreams heroes.  LiG's Jerry Chapman is currently a touring member of Kingfly. LiG has graciously covered a few of Doug's songs, and Doug and Jerry collaborated on songs featured on Jerry's great new solo CD, "Making God Laugh."  Doug, Anand, and Jerry also produced "Rumors of My Death," Jerry's stunningly awesome collection of cover songs about death, to be released in the fall. Highly recommended, all around.
Andy Freakin' Mabe Andy, in turns, rocks us, confuses us, and scares us. And that's very, very good.
Neidermeyer Neidermeyer main man Michael Slawter is an old bandmate of Doug's, and his new combo is pretty smoking.
No No Bun Bun NNBB's Maury "Mo Boote" Botton is one of Doug's oldest and best friends and his musical hero, and he's been known to help us out on lead guitar.  NNBB has just released their second CD, and it's fantastic.
Evan Olson Evan's one of the most talented singer/songwriter/instrumentalist/everything types that we know, and he's been awfully kind over the years. Plus, he undoubtedly has the best band on the east coast right now.
Quiet Riot A) Because we got to open for them this past February, and B) because it's fun to put them between Evan Olson and Rome 56.
Rome 56 Rome 56' leader, Arthur V. Lamonica, is truly a hero and a legend -- a driving force behind The Shirts (an unsung highlight of the late 70's CBGB's scene, along with Television, the Talking Heads, the Ramones, and Blondie, amongst others), and truly, the best songwriter that we've ever known personally.  Anand and Doug have both performed numerous times with Rome 56.
Suitcase
Excellent Winston-Salem, NC power-popsters.
To the Nines These pals from Greensboro have been writing great powerpop tunes since their days as Vertigo Joyride. Plus, we bought their snake. Don't ask.
The Tories We don't know 'em, but they really, really impressed us at the International Pop Overthrow festival.  Great Jellyfish-meets-Cheap Trick-style powerpop from LA.

Kingfly Pages

www.mp3.com The grandaddy of the mp3 pages.
www.besonic.com A fantastic German-based mp3 site that's been very kind to us.
www.francemp3.com Like Jerry Lewis, we're inexplicably big in France.  Or at least that's what francemp3.com tells us.
www.garageband.com Interesting site where 1000's of unsigned bands cut heads for recording contracts.

Venues

The Garage Possibly the coolest club on the planet. Richard Emmett's listening room is one of our favorite hangs in Winston-Salem.

Other Pals

David JP Hooker David is a great old friend of Doug's, and he's become quite the accomplished artist. Kingfly used an etching of David's for the cover of their first CD, "Stock Music." David works in many media, but his primary focus these days is ceramics, and you can see a number of examples of his wares here.
Peter Spivak Peter's a relatively new friend of ours from the Winston-Salem scene. In addition to being an accomplished artist, Peter leads a fine, revolving musical collective known as the Fur Lined Volcanoes, whom Doug has been known to sit in with occasionally.
The Weekly Walker Weekly epistle from a stranger-in-LA. Charles Walker is one of Doug's oldest friends. For the rest, he remains a human enigma. A sometimes loveable and usually entertaining human enigma. Read his rag! Oh, and he's also a fine artist.
